Soldiers Continue Top Performances PDF Print E-mail

FORT BENNING, Ga. - Soldiers of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit have won numerous medal and national titles in the USA Shooting National Championships, which are ongoing at the Pool International Shooting Complex and in Texas.

The 2007 National Championships kicked off June 16. The shotgun portion of the competition is taking place at the Hill Country Shooting Sports Center through June 24 in Kerrville, Texas, while the rifle and pistol events are being conducted through June 24 at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit's Pool Ranges.

U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Soldier Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Tamas won the Men's Free Rifle Prone match followed by Maj. Michael E. Anti June 21 at Pool Outdoor Range. Christopher Abalo received the Bronze Medal. Paralympic shooter Staff Sgt. Joshua J. Olson shot his personal best score of a 588 out of a possible 600 points, which brings him one step closer to the 2008 Paralympic Team.

In Men's Three Position Free Rifle competition June 19, USAMU's Sgt. 1st Class Jason A. Parker took the Gold Medal and Anti got the Silver; Matthew Wallace took the Bronze. In the junior category, Thomas Csenge was first, while Phillip Huckaby finished in second and Michael Dickinson took third.

Emily Caruso earned the top spot in Women's Air Rifle, while Jamie Beyerle took second and Becky Hershberger finished in third place. Hershberger also claimed first place in the junior category. Abigail Fong and Shasta Little finished in second and third place respectively.

In Women's Air Pistol, Navy Reserve Petty Officer 2nd Class Sandra Uptagrafft grabbed the national title, while Army Reserve Staff Sgt.

Elizabeth Callahan finished second and Brenda Shinn took third. Heather Deppe earned the national title for the Junior Air Pistol Women, while Courtney Anthony finished right behind her in second and Kelsey Imig took third place.

USAMU's Staff Sgt. John C. Ennis won the Gold Medal in the Men's Rapid Fire Pistol event; Staff Sgt. Keith Sanderson finished second and John McNally took third. For the junior men, Brad Balsley took the national title, while Sean Ragay and Tyler Imig took second and third respectively.

In Men's Standard Pistol, Sgt. 1st Class Thomas A. Rose of the USAMU captured the national title, Ennis finished second and Richard Kang took third. Sean Ragay took first for the junior men, while Tyler Imig finished second and Cody Owsley took third place.

In Kerrville, Sgt. 1st Class Shawn C. Dulohery of the USAMU grabbed the national title in Men's Skeet, while his USAMU teammate Sgt. 1st Class James Todd Graves took second; Randal McLelland finished in third. In Junior Men's Skeet, Jon McGrath took first, Hunter Wise finished second and Frank Thompson took third.

Kimberly Rhode won the national championship in Women's Skeet, while Connie Smotek and Brandie Neal took second and third place respectively. Emily Blount captured the national title for the junior women, while Alexander Chiang finished second and Caitlin Connor took third.

USAMU Soldiers swept the Men's Double Trap event. Spc. Joshua M. Richmond, Pfc. Walton Glenn Eller III, Spc. Jeffrey G. Holguin and Staff Sgt. William H. Keever finished in the top four spots in the men's open category.

More than 300 rifle and pistol shooters as well as approximately 150 shotgun shooters from across the nation are competing in the week-long national championships conducted by USA Shooting, the national governing body for the Olympic shooting sports. Scores and photos are available online at
