DORADO ON TEXAS FLATS CAUGHT ON FLY Written by Walt Humann ![]() Walt Humann, and Eric Glass with a Dorado caught on the Flats near South Padre Island. Photo By W.J. Humann, Jr. The sand flats were gorgeous with great visibility in about 2 1/2 feet in water, a relatively light breeze and clear skies. We sight cast and caught several more reds and a number a good sized ladyfish and sighted (but never hooked up on) several schools and individual pompanos. In the later afternoon, Eric and I noticed an unusually dark fish gliding toward us over the white sand from our back quarter. As we slowed our drift and the fish began to arc around the side of our skiff, it was clear that this was something larger and much more unusual. I was using a tan and white clouser minnow fly at the time and made a long upwind cast behind the boat as I caught a brief flash of deep cobalt blue, green and yellow. My cast wasn't one of my best and the fly landed several feet away. Nevertheless, the still unidentified fish streaked over and took the fly and I set the hook. The fish began a series of acrobatic performances and long runs. After much chaos and disbelief in our boat, and several attempts to grab the fish (we didn't have a net or Boga Grips) , I finally landed a brilliant colored dorado from the Texas Laguna Madre bay tens of miles from any gulf access! The fish measured 27" with a 12" girth and weighed over 4 lbs. |
