![]() Bowhunter Nicole Ellis takes lead in women’s archery contest Nicole Ellis of Kyle thought she was going to take a 130-class deer that she and her husband had been watching leading up to archery season in Irion County. But the buck proved her wrong. Ellis hunted birds with her father and brothers for years, but her boyfriend-now-husband introduced her to archery hunting about three years ago and she was hooked. “Last year I shot a cull buck, and I’ve shot a few turkeys and hogs,” she said. But this year’s buck was special. “I was in a tree stand in a big pecan tree near the Middle Concho River,” she said. “He came in and I put a really good shot on him at 10- to 15 yards. But he ran farther than we thought and we couldn’t find him. I was devastated.” Her husband had captured the shot from another stand on the same tree. “We watched it over and over – we couldn’t figure out what had gone wrong.” The answer came several days later. “My husband found it, the buck had run into the river and he sank,” she said. “He had floated up later and there was a vulture on top of him. My husband called me right away, I was so excited.” Unfortunately, the vultures had picked the head clean. “We kept it in the garage for a few days, it stunk so bad,” she said. The buck was aged at 5 ½ years, and the preliminary score was 140 3/8, and leads the Women’s Free Range Archery division in the Texas Whitetail Classic deer contest. Ellis is a World Geography teacher at San Marcos High School, and the students can present challenges that rival the big bucks. “It has been an interesting experience,” she said, noting her mother was also a teacher. “I have a lot more admiration for teachers than I did growing up.” But archery hunting is in her blood, and she has tried all the new equipment and broadheads. “I’m pretty much a perfectionist,” she said. “Gun hunting seems a little too easy now.” |
