JOURNAL NOTES:
Pintails would not stay out of the decoys all morning! Early season duck hunting here in Texas is always looked forward too but it can be hit or miss. Temperatures have been less than desirable with daytime highs getting up to the 80’s but waterfowl hunting is a disease to my hunting buddies and we go anyway. We headed to a private lake in west Texas. After trying to find our way there it what appeared to be a fog thick as pea soup we set up a nice mix of goose/duck floaters as well as goose/duck full bodies on a flooded grass flat. We then got our Ruff Stands set in some flooded willow trees that would serve as our blind for the day and waited for sunrise. Shooting time arrived and there were ducks all around from the get go.
We each took shots at back flapping singles over the decoys and quickly it was turning into a pretty good hunt. Champ was in heaven jumping off his new Ruff Stand and made some quick retrieves through the shallow water.
Hero Shot of Chris and Dallas The birds worked the call great and worked the decoys even better especially with the little wind we had. In the end we shot a limit by 8:45 that consisted of Mallards, Pintails, Teal, and a couple nice Redheads. 15 ducks of this quality during the early season is always a great hunt and it was fun to enjoy it with Chris and Dallas. Early season is here and from this start it looks to be a good one!!
I especially want to thank Cliffs Auto Service in Springtown, TX for sponsoring the hunt. The donuts were great and the Chicken Express might have been the highlight of the day….Thanks Cliff!!!
