Martens Maintains Lead

Weighing in nearly 80 pounds after two days of competition, Aaron Martens of Leeds, Ala., held off hard-charging Bryon Velvick of Del Rio, Texas, to maintain his lead of nearly 3 pounds at the Bassmaster Elite Series' Lone Star Shootout at Falcon Lake.

Martens astounding two-day total is 79 pounds, 13 ounces, which puts him on pace to shatter the BASS four-day heavyweight record of 122 pounds, 14 ounces, set by Steve Kennedy at California's Clear Lake in 2007. Amazingly enough, the top 5 anglers could conceivably break the record.

"Sharing with Byron is nerve wrecking," said Martens. "I can see when he is catching them and it's a little disheartening, especially, when he's catching bigger ones like he was today."

The area, which has a foundation that bass are using for habitat, is a 1/4-mile stretch, and has yielded nearly all of the weight for the two competitors. Martens, though, has a secondary stretch that he has visited and has some untouched water that he believes is capable of yielding similar weights.

Martens caught his biggest fish of the day, a 9-pound, 7-ounce lunker, on his first cast and was able to upgrade his weight throughout the day. He is focusing on fish in deeper water throwing a Carolina rig to entice the biggest bass.

"This is so much fun," said Martens, "But it's sick to weigh-in nearly 80 pounds and not be the clear-cut leader of the tournament. It could take 145 pounds to win this thing."

Velvick, who caught the largest limit of the day weighing 41 pounds, 11 ounces, said he would stick to the spot the rest of the tournament. Like Martens, he has another spot that he could flip a solid limit on, but he felt he couldn't deny the success he has had the first two days.

"I guess I will either be a zero or a hero but I'm sticking to this spot," said Velvick, 43. "I learned a lot about that area today. Now I just hope the area replenishes."

Maintaining third position was Mark Davis of Mt. Ida, Ark., with 68 pounds, 13 ounces. Davis is followed by Paul Elias of Laurel, Miss., with 67 pounds, 6 ounces and 2006 Angler of the Year Mike Iaconelli with 66 pounds, 5 ounces.

Byron Velvick shows one of his big fish Friday.Elias jumped 22 places with a Friday catch of 39 pounds, 1 ounce. The top 50 anglers moved on to Saturday's competition. The tournament, the third of the 2008 Elite season, will conclude Sunday with the winner receiving $100,000.

Also qualifying for the cut was 2004 Bassmaster Classic champion Takahiro Omori in 14th and Elite Series rookie Wade Groom of South Carolina in 36th.

In the co-angler division, set to end Saturday, Randall Jackson of Oklahoma opened up a more than 12-pound lead in the chase for the top prize of $25,000. Trailing Jackson was Louisiana's Russell Lohman (45-6) and Texan Chad Kallina (45-4).

Daily launches through Sunday will be at 8 a.m. CT at the Zapata County public boat ramp at Lake Falcon Park, half a mile south of Veleno Bridge/U.S. Hwy 83 on County Road. Daily weigh-ins at the park begin at 5 p.m CT. Both are free and open to the public.
