Home lake knowledge helps team move from 11th place to the lead

Local favorite Lance Vick landed 21 pounds on Saturday morning to help elevate the team of Kelly Jordon, David Smith, David Walker and Vick to the lead at the Toyota Texas Bass Classic at Lake Fork. The team moved from 11th place to the top of the leaderboard when the four anglers’ brought in a two-day total of 122 pounds, 12 ounces.

Vick was silent about his techniques when questioned on the stage with the crowd and other competitors listening, but he told Lone Star Outdoor News he caught his fish on his signature pattern – deep-diving crankbaits. But where he found the fish will remain a secret until after Sunday’s final.

Defending champion captain Terry Scroggin’s team of Scroggins, Russ Lane, Craig Dowling and Shaw Grigsby finished Day 2 in second place with 115 pounds, and the team of Chad Morganthaler, Matt Reed, Brian Penso and Stacey King moved up to third with 101 pounds, 4 ounces.

The battle Saturday afternoon determined what five would continue fishing Sunday, when the top five teams will battle for the $250,000 top prize. Bobby Lane’s team of Byron Velvick of Del Rio, Chad Brauer and Ben Matsubu finished the day in fourth with 97 pounds, 12 ounces, and Mike Iaconelli’s team of Danny Correia, Randy Howell, Cliff Pace and Iaconelli made it to the final day with 92 pounds, 8 ounces. That left the team of Jeff Kriet, James Niggemeyer, Mark Rose and Kevin Short 5 pounds short of the finals.

David Wolak’s team led after Day 1, but struggled on Day 2 to drop to 10th. A swimbait bite that worked for many of the teams died with the wind on Saturday afternoon, when a breezy morning turned into a balmy afternoon.

Iaconelli thought he had the big bass of the day (8 pounds) until Gary Klein of Weatherford, Jimmy Mize and Ray Sedgwick each brought in fish weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces. Bobby Lane’s 11 pound, 12 ounce largemouth from Day 1 still holds onto the big bass lead.

But Iaconelli was positive about his team fishing in the finals. “We found two glory holes,” said Mike Iaconelli. “We feel good about our chances.”

In Sunday’s final, all four anglers from each team will fish both the morning and the afternoon sessions, with the winning team sharing the $250,000 top prize.
