The winning team of Kelly Jordon, from left, David Walker, David Smith and Lance Vick celebrate after being named winners of the 2008 Toyota Texas Bass Classic Sunday at Lake Fork. Photo by Lisa LeVrier With 20 minutes to go on the final afternoon of the Toyota Texas Bass Classic, teammates Lance Vick and David Smith hooked up at the same time. “Lance said he had a good one,” Smith said. “I told him he would have to get it himself, I have one too.”
The two bass weighed more than 11 pounds combined and upped Kelly Jordon’s team to 228 pounds, enough to win the title and the $250,000 check.
Local favorites Jordon and Vick anchored the team to a 14-pound lead after the morning session. But the biggest move in the morning came from the team of Bobby Lane, Chad Brauer, Ben Matsubu and Byron Velvick. Lane’s team caught a late flurry and moved from fourth to second place with 62 morning pounds.
In the afternoon session, Jordon’s team felt it had to abandon its deep-water pattern and go shallow, as rumors spread that they were trailing. “We are nervous as all get-out,” Jordon said at the weigh-in. “I can’t hardly breathe.” The team caught 54 pounds, 4 ounces in the afternoon.
Jordon caught more than 85 pounds of the team’s three-day total, the biggest one-angler catch of the tournament. After being involved in developing the event, Jordon was ecstatic. “Seeing this all come together, and to win it, it’s a dream,” he said. “I can’t find the words.”
The drama came down to the final group, when the team of Chad Brauer, Ben Matsubu, Byron Velvick and captain Bobby Lane came to the stage, but not before Velvick ran out of gas on his way in. “I put 20 gallons in because we were going to fish shallow,” Velvick said. “We missed one point we were going to hit on the way in and about eight minutes of fishing.”
The team found its fish in 20-25 feet of water on deep-diving crankbaits, but fell just short with 219 pounds, 12 ounces.
Mike Iaconelli’s loved his last three weeks fishing in Texas. “I’ve caught more fish than ever in Texas,” he said. “I love it.”
The team fished deep-diving crankbaits. “But after awhile, a lot of boats were in the area. We didn’t adapt as well as we needed.” His team finished the event in fifth place with 146 pounds. Chad Morganthaler’s team brought in 40 pounds in the afternoon to move to 3rd place with 183 pounds. Teammate Stacey King carried the load for the team, mostly using a jig.
Terry Scroggins’ team, including Russ Lane, Shaw Grigsby and Craig Dowling, bumped its total to 180 pounds, 4 ounces and finished fourth. “We went for the big ones,” Grigsby said. “But we ran out of spots.” Scroggins, the defending champion, said last year’s magic just wasn’t there. “It felt good last year,” he said. “Now I know how it feels to be on the other end.”
Bobby Lane’s 11-pound, 11-ounce bass caught on Day 1 took the Lucchese Big Bass Award, taking home a Toyota Tundra truck and a pair of custom boots.
It was Jordon and Vick who stole the show and excited the crowd, but it was the late double by Vick and Smith that excited the team. “This is awesome,” Vick said.
