On June 10, a black bear was captured in the city of Del Rio. The bear had been spotted in the area for more than a day by a jogger and others, and it later climbed a pecan tree in the southern portion of the city.

Police cleared the area, and Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist Sylvestre Sorola used a dart gun to anesthetize the bear. The bear climbed further up the tree and became unconscious. Firefighters used their ladder truck to haul the bear to the ground.

Game wardens placed the bear in a tunnel-shaped cage and transported it to the Black Gap WMA about 225 miles to the west where it was successfully released with no ill effects.

Sorola said the bear was a young male weighing about 100 pounds, and likely wandered into the area looking for a mate.
